Fluconazole is an antifungal (antibiotic) that resists and controls different infections in the body caused by fungi and yeasts. Fluconazole, as is the name of the ingredient, is available in different brands and generic brands all across the stores, and to collect the same, you need a primitive prescription (prescription needed for the first use only).

Use Of Fluconazole

Common use of Fluconazole is seen in cases of different types of candidiasis, like –

  • Oropharyngeal – Virus infection in the mouth.
  • Esophageal – Infection in the food-pipe.
  • Vaginal – yeast infection in and around the vagina is very common.
  • Cryptococcal meningitis – In the brain and spinal cord line.

The same can be used both on-label and off-label in many other types of infections in both adults and children (including infants).

How Does It Work?

Virus or yeast, they need some type of cell membrane to survive in our body. Without this membrane, they cannot survive, and they procure the same by some of the enzymes in our body. Fluconazole works on the enzymes and stops their flow. Hence, the virus and yeast cannot survive in the body. This is the mechanism of working for Fluconazole in simple terms.

Dosage Details Of Fluconazole

Fluconazole can be used by both children and adults, but the usage or dosage has to be decided according to the age of the patient. While the dosage for adults in different types of infection is almost common, the same differs in the case of children. Here are the infection-wise and age-wise details of the dosage of Fluconazole –

  • Vaginal infection – 150mg a day. (usually one dose is sufficient)
  • Infection in the urinal tract – 50-200mg a day, depending on the weight (single dose sufficient).
  • Cryptococcal meningitis –
    • For adults (more than 13 years) – start with 400 mg and then continue with 200mg for 10-12 weeks.
    • For Children (6-13 years) – 12mg for each kg of weight at the start and then 6mg/kg.
    • Children below 6 years – The Doctor will decide the dose.
  • Infection caused after Bone marrow Transplantation – 400mg/day for tenure decided by the doctor.
  • Esophageal Infection
    • Adults (Above 13years) – 200mg on 1st day, and 100mg for 3 weeks.
    • Children (6-13 years) – 6mg/kg on day 1 followed by 3mg/kg for 3 weeks.
    • Children (below 6) – Critically decided by the doctor.
  • Oropharyngeal Infection
    • Adults (Above 13years) – 200mg on 1st day, and 100mg for 2 weeks.
    • Children (6-13 years) – 6mg/kg on day 1 followed by 3mg/kg for 2 weeks.
    • Children (below 6) – Critically prescribed by a doctor.
  • Other infections
    • Adults – 400mg/day for 2 weeks.
    • Children (3 months to 13 years) – 25mg/kg on day 1 followed by 12mg/kg for 2 weeks.

Side Effects Of Fluconazole

If the dose given to the patient is as per the direction stated above and consultation with a doctor has been followed after it, chances are less that you will develop side effects. Still, here is the list that you can face in critical conditions –

  • Dizziness
  • Stomach Pain (in case of intestinal infection)
  • Taste-change (in case of oral infection)
  • Headache
  • Diarrhoea
  • Nausea
  • Jaundice

Precautions For Treatment With Fluconazole

  • Liver diseases, if any, must be disclosed to your doctor to avoid jaundice. The enzymes that Fluconazole controls are secreted from the liver. Hence, if there remains any issue, you can face trouble.
  • Follow the dosage critically prescribed by the doctor, as in the case of Fluconazole, dosage changes with age and infection type. Alteration in the following dosage can turn on serious adversities for you.
  • Do not take pregnancy pills (hormonal contraceptives) during medication with Fluconazole, as they react to form unanticipated pregnancy.
  • Stop taking antidepressants while you take Fluconazole; the same can cause rashes on your skin.
  • Warfarin and other blood thinners must also be stopped during treatment with Fluconazole.
  • If you have any pre-existing cardiac issues, let your doctor know that. A slight change in dosage is essential in such conditions.

Conclusion

Fluconazole is a very much powerful antibiotic to treat fungal and yeast infections in you. The medicine is highly critical as for every ailment, the dosage is different, and it also differs with the age of the patient. However, if properly dosed, your infection will be cured easily in some weeks. Hence, have a prescription and avail it from the genuine stores.
